Prejudiced Content Creators are Corrupting Modern Media Consumption

Audiences who consume massively produced content like movies and television are constantly changing in their perspectives and expectations. While world audiences grow and change, it is natural that the content created for those audiences should be subject to change as well. However, shifts in modern storytelling towards stories representative of a vaster category of audience viewpoints, makes viewers who are stuck in the past extremely uncomfortable. The online reception from content creators like “Nerdrotic”, of media from Star Wars and Marvel, masks blatant misogyny, racism, and homophobia under the guise of truth. The gross misuse of blanket terms such as the infamous “woke” work alongside media slander to support the regression of audience literacy. Young media consumers are being encouraged to gravitate towards dangerous prejudiced perspectives.
The twisting of the term “woke”, which was once a signal of awareness regarding social justice, expresses the incompetence and hypocrisy of content creators standing on supposedly forward-thinking ground. The term woke was first coined in the early-mid 2010’s during the Black Lives Matter movement. The word can be defined as: “aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)” (Webster, “Woke”). This definition undeniably refers to the beneficial and much needed support of social and political equality. However, the positive intentions of this same word have, in recent years, been used in a hateful way. “Woke” has become a catch-all term for bigoted content creators to assign to all media with any drop of diverse representation. The use of the label in this way explicitly implies that the progression of representational narratives is the downfall of modern storytelling. A prime example of the misuse of this word is in the content of popular live streamer “Nerdrotic”, who frequents the term woke as means to butcher shows and movies with any form of “diverse” representation. However, this so-called “diversity” might just mean, for example, the presence of female main characters in Star Wars. Content creators like Nerdrotic, heavy handedly refer to modern media production as “Woke Hollywood”. However, while Nerdrotic presses the belief upon his audience that he is fighting against “poorly written streaming shows” (Buechler 6/24), he then posts comments revealing his true gripes with modern media. He can be cited on X saying things like: “Only women can get pregnant, Goodnight!” (10/24), “Disney Star Wars Pronouns” (6/24 — In reference to a Star Wars character being referred to as “they” one singular time) and “Only one of these images features captain America” (11/24 — In response to an image and implicitly signaling that Marvel’s recent update of the Captain America story, starring an African American actor, is less legitimate than the version featuring his white counterpart). This bashing of modern media implicitly encourages storytelling and the competence of audiences to regress, egging on the return to archaic stories because they appease heteronormative and misogynistic ideals.
The harm these content creators have on audiences is often overlooked, dismissed as a matter of opinion, when in reality their words are anything but harmless. The internet is frequented by more and more young people every single day. Easily influenced youth often can’t tell the difference between truth and bias. Without the correct background knowledge about the history of stereotypes in media, the average young fan might come across a prejudiced content creator and imitate their tendency to attack diversity and adopt exclusionary beliefs. Nerdrotic showcases this ridiculous and dangerous defense of outdated principles in a tweet discussing a modern Marvel show (with a largely female cast, and lgbtq+ characters) in September of 2024. He states that “Agatha All Along is NOT a show made for Marvel Comic fans or men in general… It is a show made for wine moms whose accessory kids are raised by nannies, and it reflects the Los Angeles they live in today.” (9/24). This thinking evolves from the panicked feeling that some sense of individual dignity or power is being threatened by the evolution of inclusive narratives in media. It expands on a world where massively consumed film and tv products are catered towards only a small portion of the global community. While bigoted content creators rely on their “free speech” to justify these harmful ideas, their hope is that film and tv will regress to reflect their worldview, and their worldview only. Furthermore, it inherently narrows the minds of all media consumers and buries the varying perspectives of those in our vastly diverse world.
A prejudiced youth has long lasting detrimental effects to the future of freedom and diversity, for a biased younger generation ushers in and encourages outdated perspectives. Obviously, the youth of today are the ones who set the tone for systems in future world eras. So, when exclusionary perspectives are facilitated in younger generations, it paves the way for them to make uneducated and prejudiced decisions which, in mass, could change the future entirely. This connects back to the age-old problem, of the disproportionate sway of freedoms which improve the quality of life, in favor of one social group opposed to the other. As a society, much progress has been made to provide things like freedom of speech, and the encouragement of diverse perspectives to the people of today. The limitations which a prejudiced youth would encourage in media, like decreased representative narratives, would create a world where these freedoms are not considered or respected. Media production is a prime outlet for the voices of the people; by narrowing this channel of expression, these voices are diminished completely.
The content of Nerdrotic is problematic in itself, but it also represents a vaster category of individuals who are determined to craft a modern media landscape which excludes diverse groups of people and encourages the youth of today to develop their thinking along similar lines. A world in which this process of media hatred continues completely undermines all the social and political representational progress which the public has worked for, for years on end. While inclusive storytelling is labeled as excessive liberalism, the idea that modern stories should be accessible to everyone is anything but revolutionary. The progression of representation on a global scale has been infuriatingly slow, and to turn back the clock on modern storytelling, is to erase such progress completely.
